Background of the study
Hashtag movements on Twitter have become a prominent feature of Nigerian digital communication, driving semantic shifts through rapid, collective discourse. The innovative use of hashtags not only categorizes content but also transforms word meanings and connotations in real time (Akinlade, 2023). This study examines how hashtags serve as catalysts for semantic change by encapsulating complex ideas and emotions within succinct phrases. The research compares different hashtag movements to understand the evolution of meanings that accompany their usage, reflecting socio-cultural and political undercurrents (Ibrahim, 2024). As Nigerian netizens employ hashtags to participate in public debates, protest, and entertainment, the semantic shifts observed provide critical insights into language dynamics in digital spaces (Okoro, 2023). By analyzing a variety of hashtag-driven discourses, the study aims to delineate how semantic transformations occur and the factors that drive these changes, thereby highlighting the interplay between language, technology, and culture in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although hashtag-based semantic shifts have gained attention in digital studies, there is a notable lack of comparative research addressing how these shifts occur across different hashtag movements in Nigeria. Existing literature primarily focuses on individual cases, without systematically examining the underlying mechanisms that facilitate semantic change. This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how hashtags reframe meaning in digital communication. The present study seeks to address this shortcoming by comparing various hashtag movements on Twitter, analyzing the factors that drive semantic shifts and their broader implications for language evolution (Afolabi, 2024).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of hashtags in redefining word meanings within Nigerian digital discourse. By comparing multiple hashtag movements, the research offers valuable insights into the mechanisms of semantic change, benefiting scholars, digital media practitioners, and policymakers in understanding language evolution in online environments (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is confined to examining hashtag-based semantic shifts on Twitter within Nigerian digital discourse. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline linguistic practices.
